We’ve got a few suggestions for recently retired players worth investing in, as you might even get to watch their stock rise once again and your pocketbook fatten in the process.

Brett Favre.  What can you say?  Whether you were entranced by his play on the field, or annoyed by his retirement antics, you can’t argue with his career numbers.  While his tour with the New York Jets seemed like the end at the time, he resurrected his career again with the Vikings and went on to break too many records to name.  You have to take the good with the bad when it comes to Favre.

But while he may have thrown the most interceptions in history, he threw for 10,000 MORE yards than second place on the list, a guy you may have heard of named Dan Marino (71,838 to Marino’s 61,361).

In the world of cardboard, Favre entered the league just as the printing presses of card companies went crazy.  Whereas nowadays some rookies have well over 250+ rookie cards on the market, Favre at least only has around 20+ cards that can be considered first year issues.

One of the most well known RC’s of any sport over the last 20 years, his 1991 Stadium Club has been a staple in the industry.  This is evident by the fact that over 9,000 have been submitted to PSA, with over 1,000 of them grading at a GM MT 10, and the cards ability to always pop up no matter where you go.

Here are a couple of other unique options as well:

1991 Action Packed Rookie Update
Remember Action Packed?  Well, some of you will.  This is a great card with a unique texture, and is worth considering, only run about $20-$40.

1991 Star Pics Autograph Rookie
Autograph Rookie cards were just becoming ‘hip’ at the time, and this is a tough find in pristine condition. Relatively cheap between $60 and $200 depending on condition or grade.

Only around 7 of these have been graded at the GM MT 10 range by PSA, and you can expect to pay a high premium.

Another recent retiree on the 'invest now' list, is Ladanian Tomlinson.  Like many heroes, LT (the 2nd coming) did not choose the Barry Sanders route to retire at the very top of his game.  While Sanders rushed for 2,000 yards in 1997, and then followed up with a 1,400 yard season in 1998 and abruptly retired, LT went to the New York Jets for his final 2 seasons, rushing for 914 yards in 2010, followed by 280 in his final season.

Why is this important?  Isn’t this the same guy who rushed for 13,684 yards, good for 5th on the alltime list?  Yes, and he also scored 162 career touchdowns, 3rd all-time.

But some of the legend and lore that was so obvious during his prime with the San Diego Chargers lost its luster over his last few seasons.  As Tomlinson heads toward a surefire first ballot hall of fame induction, his value will once again be more appreciated for the totality of his accomplishments and the time to buy is now.

While over 200 LT cards are available from the 2001 printing presses, here are a couple suggestions for rookie card investments:

Unique card with both players (jersey or football), goes for around $25-$40 ungraded.  $100 PSA 9

They are very hard to find in good condition because of the colored borders that exist.  Cards that grade in Mint 9 condition are selling for around $300.00

Highly graded versions run in the $800 range

2001 Bowman Chrome LaDainian Tomlinson RC
Autographed and refractor versions available as well.  The centering of these cards is worth close attention.

Here's what's up for bid now.

The Kurt Warner story is well documented, from stocking grocery shelves to Super Bowl champion.  Starting only one season at Northern Iowa, Warner went undrafted and failed to catch on during a tryout with the Green Bay Packers in 1994. He would work at a grocery store and do a little coaching before going to the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena League in 1995, and onto NFL Europe in 1998.

In 1999, Warner was slated to be the backup for the St Louis Rams, but took over for an injured Trent Green and ended up winning MVP of both the regular season and the Super Bowl along the way to the title.

Similar to Favre above, he had a single rough year in New York (Warner for the Giants) but he also rebounded with his next team, also like Favre.  In 2008, he led the Cardinals to a Super Bowl appearance, and despite losing to the Steelers for a 1-2 career record in the big game, Warner holds the three highest single-game passing yardage totals in the history of the Super Bowl.

Though he has just over a dozen official RCs - as card companies scrambled to get him into late-season sets in 1999 during his rise to stardom - he does have an autographed card, Playoff Contenders that is probably considered the  best investment for his RC.

There are also a few 1995 Iowa Barnstormer cards out there, from his days in the Arena league, and some collectors might prefer this due the uniqueness of the card.

It seems that offensive players always get the glory, and the trading card world is no different.  But we’d be amiss if we didn't include one name to the list of potential risers from the defensive side of the ball.  While Derrick Brooks or Junior Seau are probably higher ranked on the echelon of defensive players in history, we give the nod to Michael Strahan.  While many players remain in the bright lights of the TV world, not too many have made the transition outside of the sports world.  In September of 2012, Strahan permanently joined the highly rated television morning talk showLive! with Kelly and Michael alongsideKelly Ripa.  This may help the value of his cards over time.

Strahan holds the single-season NFL sack record with 22.5, but not without controversy.  Brett Favre famously slid down on the play, and was widely criticized for ‘giving’ Strahan the record, albeit deserved.  Strahan has always seemed to be able to remain in the spotlight some way or another, and that can only mean good things for card investors.

Strahan's best card and probably the only one worth buying for the long term is the 1993 Fleer Ultra RC.  A PSA 10 GEM MINT was sold recently for $75, up from $40 in 2012.  Check out Strahan's reasonably priced rookies here.

The list hasn't actually changed that much over the last 15 years, despite the excess production of cards in the 80's and 90's.  We used Ebay action listings November 2012-January 2013 to give a rough gauge of popularity, as noted below, but it was not the only measure by any means.

10.   Barry Sanders 1989 Score RC
Always understated, Barry Sanders was the model of consistency on the field and has remained so in the market despite the mass production of his rookie card.  With over 300 sold listings on Ebay during the 3-month sample period listed above shows that collectors haven't forgotten how amazing Sanders feats were on the gridiron.

9.  Dan Marino 1984 Topps RC
Marino probably won't last on this list once players like Favre, Manning and Brady are enshrined, but for now he still remains in the top 10.  Although higher production numbers (and maybe a few fakes) push his number to over 600 sold during the sample window, Marino's quick release and staggering numbers are still fresh in the mind of collectors.

 

8.  Johnny UnitasJohn Unitas rookie card 1957 Topps
Johnny U's popularity has stood the long test of time, and his RC popularity is a testament to just how special a player and icon he has been for the game of football.  While he had under 100 sold listings in the sample, we have used the 'printing presses curve' to reserve a spot for him in the top 10.  Nearly any vintage dealer will tell you that Unitas is always in high demand.

7.  Jerry Rice 1986 Topps RC
Some say Rice is the best PLAYER in NFL history, but his rookie card has always been a strange one.  Without his presence in the 1986 Topps production, the set may have been written off almost as quickly as Max Hedroom was in the 80's.  But Rice has kept it at the top of everyone's mind in the market, since he sits atop nearly every record feasible for a wide receiver.  With over 300 sold listings, he continues to a hotly traded hall of famer.

6.  Jim Brown 1958 Topps
Similar to Unitas, Jim Brown's legendary status has endured into the contemporary game of today.  His toughness and prowess has kept his rookie card on many people's lists, and while under 100 sold listings don't allow him to compete with cards that are mass produced, he will remain on this list for a long time to come.

5.  Joe Namath 1965 Topps
When you talk popularity contests, there's no question that a guy with the nickname 'Broadway Joe' is going to make it.  With 99 sold listings, he's still a fan favorite, despite his efforts over the past few years that may have caused some people to lose interest.  His contract with the Jets was part of a transformational time in the league, and we can 'guarantee' he'll be atop many lists in the hobby for quite some time.

4.  Joe Montana 1981 Topps RC
Whether Joe is the greatest QB of all-time or not is always debatable, but there was a time when his RC failed to gain too much traction even as he went into retirement.  But over the last 15 years he has leapfrogged many others, and with just over 600 sold listings it's clear he is always in the discussion for nearly every 'top' list of any kind in relation to the NFL.

3.  Walter Payton 1976 Topps RC
Gone but not forgotten.  The entire country seemed to embrace the 1985 Bears Super Bowl team, and Walter Payton as the workhorse of the squad.  Since those days, his RC has always been heavily traded and with nearly 250 sold listings, that has not waned.  The memories of watching Payton bowl over opposing defenses has endured the test of time.  An strong argument could be made for Payton to be number one, as he is almost always amongst the 'most watched' auctions on ebays lists every day.

2.  John Elway 1984 Topps RC
An astounding 995 sold listings during the sample months, Elway remains a top seller in all age groups.  While the number of cards available on the market may skew these numbers to some degree, the sheer gap of transactions between him and the next players just shows how strong his image is in the market.  Of course, his current position with Denver and their notoriety with Peyton Manning at the helm may have put him a bit higher than normal, but he would still make this list regardless.

1.  ?????? It might seem like a copout, but since the trading card world has changed so much from the vintage time periods, it is just too tough to choose the Most popular Hall of Famer card of all-time.  Soon, the latest wave of Hall of Famers will heavily impact this list.  Since so many popular cards are not even present on this list, we leave it up to you to decide who should be number one - someone listed above, or is there a player that we've left off completely that you would place above the rest?

‘Montana had the benefit of great teams and the actual greatest player: JERRY RICE.’

‘John Elway went to 3 Super Bowls without a single player you could even name, and won 2 others!’

‘Why does everyone focus on QB’s?  Jim Brown was the most dominant player of his era, and all-time.’

‘I can’t even have this discussion, Johnny U is tops, period.’

Usually these conversations end with a consensus that it is impossible to compare eras, as the game changes too much over the years, yada...yada...

The best thing about football cards, is that you CAN actually compare eras, and unlike some other aspects of society and sports - age is almost always respected.

Vintage cards stand out as a smart and safe investment, and provide a great foundation for any portfolio.  Vintage cards are comparable to a stable and trusted stock.

Back to the 1930's a few sets set the standard for early collecting, such as the 1933 Goudey Sport Kings featuring players like Red Grange and Jim Thorpe, and the 1935 National Chicle set led by Knute Rockne and Bronko Nagurski.  The heyday of the league and collecting moved into the 50’s with players like Otto Graham and Jim Brown on to the 60’s with the likes of Fran Tarkenton, Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers when cards became trendier to collect (or place in your bike spokes!).

Any card prior to 1980 is considered to be within vintage range (subjective, of course), with the early 80’s now creeping into the category.  Joe Montana’s rookie card and the 1984 set that included John Elway and Dan Marino rookie cards is probably close to ‘vintage’ distinction.

Since the vintage card market cannot be negatively impacted by injuries, player performance or company card printing practices, one of the only real concerns is the counterfeit market.  While you may still be able to find traditional vintage cards available from reputable sources and dealers, you may want to consider purchasing graded vintage cards as a safety net.

Three companies own the largest share of the grading market, PSA, Beckett and Sportscard Guaranty, providing a reputable manner of genuine collectibles.  The value of a vintage card can increase quite dramatically, if graded highly.

Vintage price-tags generally target a more wealthy collector and dealer audience, but while a player can’t increase the value with performance, the market supply and demand or type of collector certainly can.  The key with vintage investing, is to have patience in the re-selling market, finding the right collector or dealer, and buying and selling at the right time, just like any stock or real estate market.  Following trends in trade magazines, on trading sites such as Ebay or Beckett and going to trading card shows are a good way to stay in touch with the ebb and flow of the trends.

Vintage football cards are a great investment, and it is worth meeting other vintage collectors and dealers to find the right type of cards and channels to buying and selling.  There are still plenty of ‘old school’ dealings and investments out there, and this realm mirrors the age group from the era of the cards in some ways.

Just keep in mind, you’ll definitely end up in some discussions about the greatest players ever, and will definitely still have some subjective conversations about the greatest vintage football cards of all-time, with no less controversial opinions!

The NHL expanded from 6 to 12 teams.

The NBA was dominated by the Celtics 11 titles in 13 years, and saw Wilt Chamberlain score 100 points in a single game.

Major League Baseball started the decade with Bill Mazeroski's historic home run to win the World Series in Game 7, and ended with the Amazin' Mets being crowned champions as well.

But the 60's may long be remembered in American sports history for the inaugural Super Bowl.

Looking back, the latter part of the decade was a great window into our current day football landscape.  The two positions on a football team that simultaneously receive the most scrutiny and praise, are by far the coach and the quarterback.  Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr set the trend in in the first two Super Bowls, and Joe Namath cemented the QB as the focal point of every team moving forward in Super Bowl III.

Namath's 'guarantee' laid a foundation for today's NFL quarterbacks

Namath wasn't the best QB of all-time, but he definitely had the most memorable moment in football history, and it is because of his unique place in the game that he lands on the list of the Top 5 rookie cards of the 1960's.

Namath's 1965 Topps is legendary in the collecting world, and in 2001, a PSA Mint 9 sold for $20,000.   But Namath isn't popular in the hobby just because of his super bowl victory, or his 2 MVP awards, it's because of his celebrity.  His moxy, his character, his charisma set the tone for all future QB's to be the stars of the show, and eventually the stars of the sport.

While the NFL has done a great job building a league built around parity and not just one single player, it is definitely a quarterback league.  And with a glance over our collective shoulder, we can thank Mr. Namath for giving us a glimpse into the future back in the '60's.

While Broadway Joe may have put the game on the map and knew how to shine in the limelight, a quarterback that was more subdued and often overlooked during this time is Fran Tarkenton.  Tarkenton was one of the most athletic QB's of the era, and one of the first quarterbacks that forced defenses to gameplan for an agile QB well before it became commonplace.  Upon his retirement, Tarkenton owned most of the league passing records, and is still up there with 47,003 yards (6th), 342 touchdowns (4th), and 4th in career QB rushing yards, behind Randall Cunningham, Steve Young and Michael Vick.  Fran took the Vikings to 3 super bowls, but was unable to come away with a victory, which has always hindered his career record in many eyes.

Tarkenton's 1962 Topps card mirrors his career popularity, and has never quite gotten the 'due' it deserves. But it's scarcity makes it a valuable commodity if it can be find in mint condition, as there are only 6 cards graded as a PSA Mint 9, one of which sold for $10,000 in 2012.  As the mobile quarterbacks of today get more popular, Tarkenton fans and collectors can only hope that more respect will be gained for this hall of famer, both in fans and hobbyists eyes alike.

If Namath and Tarkenton helped pave the way for the quarterback evolution, there's no question that Mike Ditka helped set the bar for the tight end position.  Ditka had 427 catches for 5,812 yards and 43 touchdowns in his career, becoming the first tight end ever inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Of course, his coaching career may be more prevalent in fans minds, but he was a truly great player.  In addition, he is one of only two people (Tom Flores) to win an NFL title as a player (Bears/Cowboys), an assistant coach (Cowboys), and a head coach (Bears).

Ditka's rookie card comes from the same 1962 Topps set as Tarkenton, and is even a tougher find in good condition.  Only 4 PSA 9's are listed in PSA's records, with one selling for $10,919 in 2010.  Ditka was certainly a tough player and coach on the field, but it appears his rookie cards mirror his personality as well, a little rough around the edges.

Possibly one of the few players that was more unyielding than Ditka, was another Chicago Bear, linebacker Dick Butkus.  Butkus was also a trailblazer, and widely considered one of the most intimidating defensive players of all-time.  The Bears had 3 first round draft picks in 1965 due to some trades, and Butkus wouldn't disappoint.  Sports Illustrated immortalized him in 1970, simply titled:"The Most Feared Man in the Game."   In the collector land, Butkus' 1966 Philadelphia RC is one of the most valuable ever for a defensive player.  Similar to the '62 Topps, not too many are graded in pristine condition.  Of the 660 that have been submitted to PSA, only 5 are graded a pure MINT 9 (one sold for $14,792 in 2006).

In that same 1965 draft, the Bears were also lucky enough to select Gale Sayers.  Wasting no time, he had an amazing rookie season, scoring 22 touchdowns (14 rushing, 6 receiving, 1 punt and 1 kickoff return), even scoring 6 in one game. In total, he amassed 1,374 yards from scrimmage and 2,272 all-purpose yards...as a ROOKIE.  Although his career would be cut a little short to 6 years by injuries, he was elected into the hall of fame and will always be remembered as one of the most electrifying players to ever step foot on the gridiron.

Sayers RC comes from the same 1966 Philadelphia set as Butkus, but for some reason more have been found in good condition (no surprise, he was a star on offense!).  Still a PSA 8 will garner around $800, and a PSA 9 sold in 2012 for almost $1,900.

The 1960's were a tumultuous time of change in America, and the sporting world was a great distraction.  It's amazing to think about the things that athletes of this day had to endure to achieve their goals, and these Top 5 rookie cards of the 1960's are great symbols of the perseverance and greatness that was achieved in the decade.  Even lower graded versions are worth a look, which you may not be able to say about another decade ever again.

10. 1982 Topps Ronnie Lott
Just barely edging out Deion Sanders for a spot on the list, Lott was an all-pro at both corner and safety, and considered by many as the most fundamentally sound and arguably best all-around defensive backfield player in history.  It doesn't hurt that he led the defense on those great 49er teams.  Lott's 1982 Topps RC can be found at a reasonable value, with PSA 9's trading in the $50 range.  A PSA Gem Mint 10's sold for $1,325 in 2008.

9. 1970 Topps Alan Page
Arguably the best defensive tackle of all-time, Page is one of only 2 defensive players ever to be named MVP in the NFL (1971). While guiding the Purple People Eaters defense for Minnesota, simultaneously Page attended the University of Minnesota Law School, and also served as National Football League Players Association player representative, at times during his career.  Following retirement, Page would pursue a legal career, and is now the Honorable Alan C. Page, as associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, an office he assumed in 1993.  On opposite sides of the world now, Page shares the '70 Topps RC mantle with OJ Simpson.  A PSA Gem Mint 10 Page sold for $930 in 2012, and PSA 9's go in the $100 territory.

8. 1963 Topps Bob Lilly
The '63 Topps set contains a trio of hall of fame rookies from the defensive side of the ball.  One of which, Bob Lilly, was known for his 4-point stance while leading the Dallas Cowboys vaunted Doomsday defense from the defensive tackle position.  Investing in Lilly's RC can turn out to be quite lucrative, as you can find ungraded versions between $40-$100 and if you end up with a high graded return, you can land between $800-$1,000.

7.  1963 Topps Ray Nitschke
Originally taken in the 1958 draft (the year before Vince Lombardi became head coach), Nitschke didn't become a full-time starter at middle linebacker until 1962.  He would anchor the Green Bay Packers defense that won five NFL titles and the first two Super Bowls in the 1960s.  In cardboard, any Packer from this era is going to be popular and a PSA 9 Nitschke proves so, selling for as much as $3,476 in 2010 and $3,111 in 2012.  Another sold in 2012 for $2,247 exhibiting that the right buyer is needed in the vintage world.

6.  1963 Topps Deacon Jones
Joining Ray and Bob in the 1963 Topps set, is Dave.  Jones that is, better known as Deacon. One of the leaders of the Los Angeles Rams Fearsome Foursome, Jones was known for his pass rushing maneuver of literally slapping an offensive lineman to dispose of him.  Although illegal today, many argue that Jones dominate the career sack totals if it those numbers had been recorded when he played.  Jones doesn't have the added bonus of playing for great Packer teams like Nitschke, so he gets the slight edge for personal performance on this list.  A PSA Mint 9 Jones sold for $2,247 in 2009, and $2,869 in 2010.  A PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 sold for $381 in 2011, so value can be found even in higher grades.

5. 1957 Topps Dick Lane
Dick 'Night Train' Lane burst onto the scene in his rookie year of 1952 when he set an NFL single season record for interceptions with 14, which still stands today (he did so in a 12-game season).  He would move on to the Chicago Cardinals in 1954 and the Detroit Lions in 1960, compiling 68 interceptions during his hall of fame career.  While he is overshadowed in the '57 set by (as usual) offensive stars Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, Paul Hornung and Raymond Berry, his card is much more rare to find in top condition.  While all the others have at least a few PSA MINT 9's floating around, Lane doesn't have any registered on the PSA population report, with a PSA NM-MT + 8.5 selling for $3,600 in 2008 (only 2 exist).  PSA 7's can be found below the $100 mark, and are more common.

4.  1984 Topps USFL Reggie White
Following 2 years in the USFL with the Memphis Showboats, White was selected in the 1st round of the 1985 NFL Supplemental Draft and would go on to have one of the greatest careers of any defensive player in the history of the NFL with the Eagles, Packers and Panthers.  His 198.5 sacks are good for 2nd all-time, to go with 13 pro bowls and 2 defensive player of the year awards.  Stuck in the '86 Topps set for his NFL RC, his 1984 Topps USFL RC trades in the $100-$200 range at a PSA 9 and tends to be more popular inside the industry.

3. 1982 Topps Lawrence Taylor
The only other player to ever be named MVP on the defensive side of the ball besides Page...LT.  Lawrence Taylor was an absolute menace on the field, and terrorized quarterbacks while racking up 3 defensive player of the year awards and 2 super bowl titles.  Taylor was single-handedly responsible for offensive scheme changes all across the league, as opposing teams searched for ways to contain him.  His '82 Topps RC can be targeted in the $50 range for a PSA 9, and a PSA 10 sold for $610 in 2012.

2.  1971 Topps Joe Greene
Many would argue that LT was a better player, but "Mean Joe" Greene gets the nod in the nickname department and doubled up Taylor in Super Bowl titles, with 4.  Greene took home 2 NFL defensive player of the year awards as the leader of the Steel Curtain defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 70's, and also gets the edge because of his appearances in Coca-Cola commercials!  A PSA Gem Mint 10 Greene '71 Topps rookie sold for $5,500 in 2008, and even PSA 8's can be found trading in the $250-$350 realm, definitely a strong investment.

1.  1966 Philadelphia Dick Butkus
Fear.  It is possibly the greatest asset a defensive player can have on his side, and it's an element that each of the guys on this list used to intimidate opponents.  Butkus may have been the most feared of all, and it helps lands him at the top of this list.  In addition, his '66 Philadelphia RC is one of the more expensive football cards available, with a special mention to Bronko Nagurski's '35 National Chickle RC who was known for his prowess on both sides of the ball.   A Butkus PSA 6 or 7 can be found in the neighborhood of $200-$400, an 8 will run about $800-1,000 and on the rare occasion when you can find them, a mint PSA 9 will push well into the thousands.  Centering is often an issue with this card.

Offensive players will always get more attention amongst collectors, but the top 10 defensive rookie cards of all-time is quite impressive, and any one of these cards can be a stellar investment if chosen wisely.

We'll start with their first draft pick, defensive lineman Bob Lilly.  The Hall of Famer had a terrific career, going to 11 Pro Bowls and was named to the NFL 1960's and 1970's All-Decade Teams.   Lilly's 1963 Topps rookie card can be found at a reasonable $40 on the low end, with high graded cards landing in the $800-$1,000 area.

Staying on the defensive side of the ball, no Dallas collection should be without Randy White's 1976 Topps RC.  White came in just as Bob Lilly retired, and after a few years was moved from linebacker to d-line into Lilly's old position.  White would go on to play in 3 Super Bowls, and 6 NFC Championship Games, finishing in the same manner as Lilly, with a plaque at the Hall of fame.  His RC is a bit more available and affordable, landing in the $10-$150 spectrum.

Roger Staubach rookie cardFor the rest of your Cowboy rookie card collection, you are probably focusing on players that dodged opposing defenses.  Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman had the privilege to lead Dallas from under center, with Aikman winning 3 Super Bowls and Staubach 2.

One of Staubach's nicknames was "Roger The Dodger" as he was very athletic and able to escape pressure and create plays with his legs throughout his hall of fame career. While Aikman was a Hall of Famer in his own right, he was better known as a pocket passer and the orchestrator of the great Cowboy teams of 90's.  On the collecting front, their cards show the drastic difference between era's, as Staubach's '72 Topps only has 2 PSA 10's registered (one sold for over $22k), while Aikman's 1989 Score RC has over 585 PSA 10's on file (trades in the $100 range).

Of course, QB's need players around them to be successful, and a hall of fame running back lined up behind you can't hurt.  In the latter part of Staubach's career, he had the benefit of handing off to Tony Dorsett, while Aikman of course had Emmitt Smith in his prime.

Smith ended as the NFL's all-time leader rusher after accumulating 18,355 yards, and Dorsett still sits at a respectable number 8 with 12,739 yards.  Same story here with different eras, as only 10 total Gem Mint 10s are listed by PSA for Dorsett's 1978 Topps rookie card (one sold for $5,384 in 200), while over 350 are listed for Smith's 1990 Score Supplemental RC ($200-$350 range).

Of course, let us not forget about the wide receiver position, surely Michael Irvin wouldn't let us if we tried. But long before Irvin was winning Super Bowls as a loud mouth star receiver, Bob Hayes was literally blazing a trail for today's pass catchers.  Before his time in the NFL, Hayes was a two-time gold-medal winning sprinter for the U.S. Olympic team.  And while Irvin had more career yards by a longshot, Hayes outdid Irvin in career touchdowns with 71 to 65.  Hayes speed revolutionized the position of wide receiver in the mid 60's, and forced defenses to move to zone and bump-and-run coverages to try to stop him.  Both of these Hall of Famers are worthy of adding to your  collection, with Irvin's 1989 Score RC trading in the $50 realm at PSA 10.  Hayes 1966 Philadelphia RC is obviously more rare, with a PSA Mint 9 selling for $2,675 in 2008 and ungraded versions in the $20-$100 price range.

Many other Dallas Cowboys rookie cards deserve merit, but these would be considered some of the prime cards to invest in for any collection of 'America's Team.'

Broadway Joe's legendary guarantee and his Jets (AFL) subsequent victory over the Colts (NFL) in the Super Bowl, cemented his name in the history books.  Namath's 1965 Topps rookie card is one of the most valued around, and albeit expensive for many collectors, well worth the investment.

One of the unique things about the card, is that the picture was actually taken in a hospital, as Namath was recuperating from knee surgery.  'Broadway Joe' discussed the situation in an interview on David Letterman in 2011 (8 minutes or so into the interview).

Clearly, the RC is obviously the gem, but even a PSA 6 or 7 might set you back $1,200-$2,000.  Fear not, great value can be found in ungraded versions, as well as other years.

In addition to his RC, his 1969 Topps card has been a collectors favorite, since that is the season the Jets knocked off the vaunted Colts in Super Bowl III.  Some would make the same argument for his 1968 issue (PSA 9 sold in 2012 for over $1,000), and the reality is that investing in any Namath card from the 60's or early 70's is worth oy, especially those graded as a PSA 8 and above.

His 1973 Topps issue has its fair share of fans out there, somewhat strictly due to the photo (right).  Joe's wearing a wool cap with his name knitted into it, something many of us received from our grandma or aunty over the years (can you imagine the social media backlash if a player today did that?).  Ungraded versions can be had for under $10, while a PSA 8 is in the $50 range and a PSA 9 around $100.  Joe looks cold!

You can collect virtually all of the original vintage Namath cards without much trouble since he played in an era when Topps was really the only game in town.

Also, Topps has released some rare PROOFS from their vault of Namath's vintage cards ('72 Topps pictured below), which can be a good investment for some, although the re-sell market will depend on finding the right buyer.  You'll also want to be sure of authenticity before going this route, but can be a nice unique addition to any collection.

Our recommendation would be to stick to the true vintage Joe Namath card market.

The buzz of a card show, with kids (plenty of adults as well) ripping open packs and players signing autographs, these events are still a unique experience.  Flea markets used to be a great spot to find a steal of a deal, and in some parts some dealers go that route, for the most part, shows are now weekly, monthly or annual events instead of a daily occurrence.  Although shows aren't quite the trading ground they used to be, deals can still be made.

Obviously, the internet has made it easier to find some of these events in your area, but it has also made it easier to compare market prices and get feedback on local card shops.

eBay is, of course, one of the preferred methods to find the cards you are looking for, and includes a reputable rating system that allows for trust.  Many people in the market, even those trading on other websites, will ask for an Ebay reference before being willing to deal.  So having an eBy account with a decent number of transactions is one way to build a trustworthy trading profile online.

Major sports memorabilia auction companies also carry high grade football cards and while some set records, others for some reason, slip through the cracks and sell at very reasonable rates, especially in bulk.

In addition, Beckett has created quite the marketplace and trading ground for collectors, especially if you like message boards.  Many other sites exist on the web, but you'll need to be careful about how you select to trade or purchase.  Buying cards through Paypal can make things easier, but you'll need a reputable way to know you can trust the person, such as a rating or reference from Ebay, Beckett or another type of account.

Hobby stores are still a great place to buy cards and hobby boxes, and while you may pay premium prices at times, you're likely to have a better experience and get a better product.  Plus, if you become well known at local shops, you can usually meet other collectors and benefit from a relationship with a shop owner (find out when new products arrive, insider insight etc.).

Overall, the web and card shows are the best economical ways to buy investment grade cards, and local hobby shops are definitely worth consideration as well.  There is something to be said for a tangible purchase, but online you may be able to get better deals (especially in bulk).  We find that a varied approach is best when looking to buy investment grade football cards. When you think of trading cards you think of Honus Wagner, due to the rarity and prices that his cards have garnered over the years.  The PSA NM-MT 8 Wagner sold for $2.8 million back in 2007, Bronko Nagurski National Chicle cardand even a PSA VG-3 went for more than $1.2 million in 2012.  In 2009, even a PSA 1 sold for $400,000.  Clearly, this is the most expensive trading card in history, by a longshot, with only 50-200 ever released to the public.

In the football world, if there is a one card that is akin to Wagners, Bronko Nagurski's 1935 National Chicle RC would have to be the one.  The 36-card National Chickle production was the first "football only" set ever made, and Nagurski is the clear gem.  The only PSA 9 in existence sold in 2011 for $350,000.  The back of the cards are unique to the day, with football playing tips, instead of statistical information.  Since the back of the cards say 'one of 240 players with playing tips' it is possible that the set was intended to be 240 cards, instead of 36.

The only non-professional player included in the set is legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne.  Many consider Rockne’s issue the second most sought after football card in history, behind Nagurski.  The Rockne is generally traded in the $250-$500 range in low grades, with a PSA 9 on the market in early 2013 for $37,500 (only 3 in existence).These are the two most hallowed cards of the set and possibly all-time, but any of the cards from this set are valuable if found in good condition.  A good few other names pop out, with Clark Hinkle and Cliff Battles listed and fellow Hall of Famers as well.

Hinkle was the versatile leader of the Green Bay Packers, as a fullback/linebacker and was known to challenge Nagurski head-on, even running over him and breaking his nose one occassion.  In addition to his offensive prowess rushing and receiving, he also was a kicker and solid linebacker.  His cards fall between $350-$1,500 depending on condition.

Cliff Battles was also known for his versatility, but in an era of smash mouth football he brought more flash than force.  Although he only played 6 seasons due to contract squabbles, he excelled in rushing (led the league twice), receiving, returning kicks and also on defense, with 15 interceptions.  The value of his cards fluctuate in the $200-$1,2000 spectrum, and like the rest of the set are rare to find in great condition.

There are only 80 pure MINT 9's listed in PSA's population report for the entire set, and only one PSA 10 (Jim Zyntell).  Overall, the 1935 National Chickle set is legendary, and finding any player found in quality condition is a good investment.

Definition:  rook·ie: An inexperienced person; a novice

Ironic, it seems.  Generally the most important card in any players career is his rookie card.  But the majority of the time we spend looking at a RC is once a player is well established and therefore, no longer a rookie.

When compiling the list of top football rookie cards in the 1980's, it really seemed hard to fathom that any of these players were considered inexperienced or novice even during their first seasons in the league.  But they once were bright eyed newbies with great promise.  And they sure came true on that promise.

In chronological order:

A 'perfect' 1981 Topps Montana was reportedly sold for over $65k in 2009.

1981 Topps Joe Montana RC
Joe Cool.  With a capital C.  If there were ever a nickname that fit, this was it.  Montana was a 4-time Super Bowl winner, and most arguments over the best quarterback to ever play begin with him.  Montana is an icon, and while not the easiest on the eye, his 1981 Topps RC is arguably the most important in the hobby since the day it was printed.  Prone to centering problems, and general wear and tear from a lackluster period in the hobby, there are only a few of these in pristine condition.  In 2009, a GM MT Pristine 10 graded by Beckett, sold for over $65,000.  If that seems astronomical, it is, as a BGS 9.5 sells in a range of $2,000-$3,000.   A PSA MINT 9 will go for around $400-$600 for the most part.  Either way, this card is a must have for any pure NFL collector, and should be respected amongst the greatest cards of all-time.

1984 Topps John Elway
Just a few short years after Montana began to rise the 49ers to prominence, the 1983 draft came stock full of quarterbacks looking to dethrone Comeback Joe.  If any player could be said to have made a run at that title, it would be John Elway.  What Elway lacked around him in talent on his team, he made up for with grit and uncanny ability to snatch victory from the very jaws of defeat.  Montana won the Super Bowl battle between the two, and his rookie card just edges out Elway's as well in significance.  Elways 1984 Topps RC can be found from $25 to $2,000 depending on the condition the card is in.

It is one of the most well known in the hobby, with proof being that there are tons of fake versions floating around in the market.  A fake can usually be noticed next to an original, as the fake Elway RC's are about half as thick as a genuine version.  That's pretty solid validation, if people think you're valuable enough to create a fake, you're definitely one of the best ever!

1984 Topps Dan Marino
Sitting alongside Elway in the 1984 Topps set (and some might say on the field as well), is Dan Marino.  Marino will always be haunted by the fact that he couldn't quite capture a Lombardi trophy, but even this article proves that the competition was quite stiff in his day.

If there was ever a card that produced more fakes than the Elway, it is definitely Marino's.  The centering on this card has always been a challenge to collectors and graders alike, but a GM MT 10 can be found for under $1,000 easily.  Some would say Marino's cards are still undervalued.  Regardless, this card deserves a seat at the table, and in your collection.

1986 Topps Jerry Rice
Leave it to Topps to try and dampen the rookie card of one of the all-time greats.  Sure, it didn't hurt to catch passes from Montana and Steve Young, but many argue that they were only as good as they were because of Rice.  While the card itself probably doesn't deserve to be used for anything more than a coaster thanks to the infamous green border and flimsy quality, the smoothest pass catcher of all-time makes anything look good.  While over 14,000 Rice RC's have been submitted to PSA, only 48 have come out GM MT 10 (one of which sold for around $4,000 on Ebay in 2012).  Rice's card is one of the most important to the hobby, all despite Topps best efforts.

1989 Score Barry Sanders
One of the most exciting running backs of all-time creeps onto the 80's list just before the close of the decade.  Sanders left the game a decade later while he was on top of HIS game, and left all of us 'wanting more.'  Many fans turn toward collecting cards to fill the void of their favorite players gone by, and the 1989 Score set has stood out for some time with the likes of Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders, Derrick Thomas and more deserving a mention.  But Sanders is the crown jewel of the set, and sells for a strong $200 in GM MT 10 condition.  Again, like most sets in the 90's, it can't compare to the vintage cards of the past due to overproduction, but with 825 total copies available in GM MT 10 on the market, it is a testament to Sanders that the value is even as high as it is.  Of course, playing for the Lions, Sanders spent most of his career overcoming adversity, it seems only fitting that his rookie card would suffer the same type of fate.

For a decade of overproduced and poor quality card productions, the players depicted on the cards sure earned a spot in the top 5 rookie cards of the 1980's, and helped launch the NFL into the stratospher.  It's just a shame the card companies weren't able to do them justice.
